Benjamin Franklin aptly stated, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." His statement could not be further from the truth. As such, Dr. Master is passionate about identifying root causes of health disorders and helping patients optimize their health with a strong focus on primary public health prevention strategies. To help in this regard, Dr. Master has completed his MPH graduate work with a focus on chronic disease prevention and health promotion.
Some preventive chronic disease interests include:
- Neurodegenerative Disorders
- Memory Disorders
- Inflammatory Disorders
- Chronic Health Issues
- Stroke
- Diabetes / Reactive Hypoglycemia
- Anemia
- Metabolic Disorders
- Autoimmune Disorders
- Gut Disorders
Public health has three strategic applications toward improving health. These include primary prevention or wellness strategies, secondary prevention or pre-clinical disease strategies, and tertiary strategies or disease management. Dr. Master's clinical focus is to promote primary and secondary prevention strategies so to prevent the need for costly disease management, which oftentimes lead to greater compounding health complications.
Without question, knowledge in the field of genetics has significantly increased since 1953 but, more so with the complete mapping of the human genome in 2004. The truth is our 'genes do not dictate destiny' but, rather, our environmental lifestyle, especially as it relates to certain known and unknown risk factors, certainly will. Therefore, environmental factors including diet, stress, physical activity, family dynamics, etc. determine whether a gene is "switched on or off." The study of environmental influences on genes is known as Epigenetics. Dr. Master seeks to evaluate various environmental factors or lifestyle habits, which may lead to poor health.
Due to his public health graduate training and background, Dr. Master has a profound interest in vaccine safety, as well as a person's right to informed consent and bodily autonomy. In addition to accumulating over 25 years of personal study in vaccine science, his graduate training in public health enables greater insight regarding chronic diseases and the pervasive epidemic of neurodevelopmental disorders, especially regressive autism disorder and spectrum disorders. His public health focus pertains to primary and secondary public health prevention strategies, epidemiology, infectious disease risk factor transmission, natural experiments, epigenetic influences, as well as vaccines and immunology. In the future, Dr. Master plans to pursue research regarding infant and child neuro-development, vaccine safety, and parental and child informed consent issues.
Research overwhelmingly demonstrates how environmental lifestyle (epigenetics) determines health status. With this in mind, Dr. Master incorporates approaches in lifestyle health through individualized nutrition. The primary goal is to optimize the individual patient's epigenetic profile, thereby leading to higher quality of life overall.
Dr. Master's nutritional philosophy is holistic with an emphasis on guiding the individual in obtaining the necessary nutrients through changes in diet and lifestyle modification with nutrient dense whole foods. However, nutritional supplementation may be necessary initially to reduce inflammation and quell chronic disease processes. Dr. Master's ultimate goal is for the patient to obtain daily nutrient requirements mainly from nutrient dense whole foods, rather than relying on costly supplementation. Nevertheless, due to a condition's chronicity, supplementation may be necessary during the course of care, in order to obtain the most beneficial clinical results. Some cases may require longer courses of supplementation.
Since each person is uniquely designed and individualized, each person's nutritional plan should be unique as well. As such, prior to any nutritional recommendations, Dr. Master will most likely perform comprehensive blood laboratory work up to determine the functional range of the patient's biochemistry. The purpose of such is to ascertain whether a person is "sliding away" from health toward disease processes. When indicated or suspected, Dr. Master also incorporates genomic testing in order to obtain the most precise and individualized clinical picture regarding his patients.
